What Type of Online Learner Am I?

The North Carolina Virtual Public School believes that all students can learn online, but some may need more support than others. Where students take their online courses can make all the difference in terms of success. Some students will do well taking their online courses off campus, while other students may need to work from a school's lab environment. Others will do find in a blended setting. This test will help determine what type of online learner the student is.

Reading level: Do you enjoy reading? Or is it a real chore to read?

Basic Computer Skills: Can you attach docs, email, and word process?

Frustration Level: Do you get easily frustrated or do you keep your cool? Can you repeat a task until you get it right? Or do you give up after 3 clicks of the mouse?

Comfortable on the Internet: Can you find your way around the Internet? Can you use a search engine like Google?

Online Focus: Can stay focused while you are on the Internet, and not browse away to Youtube, Facebook, and other fun site?

Willing to Share Thoughts and Ideas: Are you open-minded about sharing your thoughts and idea about an assignment in an online forum? Other students will comment on your ideas and you will comment on theirs.

Communicate through Writing: Do you have strong written communication skills? Do will need to email and message your online instructor often, and the better you can communicate the more successful you will be.

Self-motivated and Self-disciplined: Can you meet deadlines on your own? In an online course, you won't have a teacher standing over you, urging you on every moment.

Ability to "Speak Up": If you have a problem, do you have the ability to speak up and make sure your teacher and advisor are aware?

Time Commitment: Will you be able to meet the minimum time commitments of 90 minutes a day for block courses / 50 minutes a day for yearlong courses / 4 hours a day for summer school courses?

Computer & Internet Access: Even if you are taking your online class at school, you will still do better if you have a computer at home. Of course, if you are taking your course off campus, you must have your own computer!

Thinking Before Responding: Do you rush through your work? Or do you take time to consider your thoughts and answers before you respond? In an online course, once you hit that "submit" button, your answers will immediately be sent to the instructor.

Waiting for Feedback: In an online course, your instructor will not be there instantly or all the time. Are you able to wait 24 hours for feedback or do you need immediate responses to things?

Online Confidence: Do you feel that high-quality learning can take place without going to a traditional classroom? Or do you think an online course is just a quick way to get an easy "A" or a a passing grade?

Participation: You can't sit in the back row of an online course. You will have the opportunity to ask and answer questions every day. Are you prepared to participate?

Serious about the Course: Do you understand that this course is just as important as any of your traditional classroom courses? You will receive a final grade that will go on your report card.
